Generally we use wordpress directly as a package. You don’t need any technical knowledge to use it. It is easy. It has ready themes. If you want to design your own WP theme you can do that. And it is not that hard.
Throughout this tea break series, we will learn how to design a theme for WordPress. I hope you will enjoy.
First things first. You need to buy hosting and a wordpress website to start. (Mostly hosting companies has Wordpres alreadt avaialable. Even some of them has a special hosting plan for WordPress only. ) Check these options and start your WordPress journey.
You need to have knowledge of CSS and PHP which will be really beneficial. If you don’t know you can learn throughout this time 🙂
First of all, after having a hosting and WordPress installed at that hosting plan, we need a starter theme. You can think like it is an empty plate that we will fill according to our needs.
There are different different basic themes for WordPress for this aim. Today we will use _s or in other words UNDERSCORES. You can have a look at their website from https://underscores.me/
It actually explains itself pretty well; “I’m a theme meant for hacking so don’t use me as a Parent Theme. Instead try turning me into the next, most awesome, WordPress theme out there.“
We can add a note here that this theme is created by the Automattic team which is behind the WordPress.
Another option to start with may be doing all the programming work yourself and start from scratch, but it will have lots of work compared to this way and you may need to think “If I need to go that deep?” That’s your choice. Hopefully we can have some info about that way in the upcoming sessions.
